What a licence actually buys

Lean CMS is open source. The plugin is licensed under the GPL, version 3 or later. That settles the code and nothing else: the GPL governs redistribution, and has never required anyone to answer an email, operate an update service, or stand behind a build for free.

A licence buys three things. Support, a warranty that we stand behind what we shipped, and access to updates. Those are what is withheld without one — not the ability to run the software.

Every plan above Core includes Pro. Pro is the editing workflow: snapshots and restore, preview and promote, scheduling, layout notes and the full sync workflow. Core is the one-site plan without it.

You renew by choosing to. There is no auto-renew and no stored card. One renewal date per client, everything on it, and a reminder before it arrives. If you let it lapse your site keeps working — you stop receiving updates and support, which is the thing you were paying for.

Why there are no numbers yet. The prices are being finalised, and we would rather publish them once and keep them than change them after you have bought. Ask and you will get a figure, not a meeting.

The questions we actually get asked

If it's GPL, why does it cost anything?

The GPL governs what you may do with the code once you have it, including redistributing it. It has never required anyone to give away support, a warranty, or an update service — and those are what a licence pays for. That is a normal, long-standing arrangement in the WordPress world.

Is there a free version or a trial?

No. There is no free tier at this stage — no free support, no warranty, and no free access to updates. Every Lean CMS site so far is one we have had a hand in setting up, and that is deliberate for now. Your first purchase comes with a 14-day refund, and if you want to judge it before paying, the guide site is public and complete, and we are happy to walk you through a real site.

Can I use it on client sites?

Yes, and it is a different conversation rather than a bigger number on a page. Tell us how many sites and whether you are reselling or managing them — how the relationship, the activations and the renewal work is worth getting right up front.

What counts as one site?

One website at one web address. A licence is activated against that address, so rebuilding, restoring from backup or reinstalling at the same address does not use up a second one.

Staging and test copies are free. Install it wherever you like — it is open source, and a staging copy works fully without a licence of its own. It simply does not receive updates or support, which is exactly what you want on a site nobody visits.

Running a WordPress network (Multisite)? Talk to us before you activate. It is one installation, but the licence currently counts each site in the network separately, so we will tell you which one to activate.

Does it renew automatically?

No. There is no auto-renew and no stored card. We send a reminder before your renewal date and you choose whether to pay — and renewing customers get a loyalty discount, with the details in that reminder.

What happens to my site if I stop paying?

It keeps working. Nothing switches off, nothing phones home and refuses to render, and no page starts showing a nag to your visitors. You stop getting updates and you stop being able to call us. We think a plugin that holds a live site hostage over a lapsed invoice is indefensible.

Will installing this break my existing site?

It does nothing until you convert a page, and it converts one page at a time. Your theme stays, your page builder stays, and every page you have not touched renders exactly as it does now. Build the new version privately, compare it against the live page, and swap only when you are happy.
